Though seemingly simple the magicJack service and devices can be complicated and many questions often arise when consumers are trying to setup various parts of the phone service. Due to this we saw a significant need for general information and answers to various questions that are often asked. Below we have provided answers to many of these questions and also included a wealth of general information about the company and the services they provide. We are always working to expand this section so please let us know if there is something you need help with and we will consider writing about it!
Setup – Installation, Registration and Activation
The company has made several changes to the installation process over the past few years and it can be quite confusing to many. The questions almost always circle around whether ones need to use a computer and if so in what ways. Some examples of questions I see a lot are “Do you need a computer to install the device?”, “Do you need a computer to use the device?” or “Do you simply need a computer to register the device?”. These are complicated questions and it’s best for you to visit the individual post that is applicable to the device you are installing. See the full magicJack GO installation page or the quick install guide and detailed install guide for the magicJack Plus 2014. However note that it is different if you happen to be installing a 1st or 2nd generation device. I know, complicated right?
Uninstalling The Device
As tricky as installing seems you’d think that uninstalling would be a hassle and it was in the past, but not anymore! Now you just treat the software and device as you would any other software program on your computer. If you still happen to be using the original device with the original software you will want to take a look at our uninstall guide that we put together several years ago.
Terms Of Service
People sometimes want to know what they are allowed to do and not allowed to do with their magicJack phone service and that is where the terms of service come into play. For those in Canada however the Canadian terms of service are slightly different. It is important to review these terms because there are some limitations such as a limit on the number of minutes, amount of calls made, etc… (simply to make sure a business isn’t abusing this service since it is for residential use only)
International Calling Rates
To begin making international calls with this service you will need to buy prepaid international credits. This can easily be done in your magicJack account at the official site. To access your account just following our instructions for login. The company provides free international calls to all U.S. numbers no matter where you are in the world and fairly cheap rates to nearly every other country worldwide. Just take a quick look at our simple international calling rates table to find out how much it will cost to call anywhere in the world right now!
Area Codes & Exchanges
The company provides a very large range of area codes for users’ convenience. They don’t provide every area code or exchange in the United States but a very large number of them are covered. Regardless, all calls in the U.S. whether local or long distance are free so you should be fine even if they don’t have your are code available. Access our easy to navigate area codes and exchanges table to see if they have your area code available, maybe they will have it and your preferred exchange number as well!
Faxing with magicJack
One of the biggest questions asked about magicJack is can you fax with their services? Well, this is an odd one because the answer is indeed yes, though it’s not officially supported by the company. Faxing with any VoIP Service is often dodgy at best but for those that don’t need to send a large number of faxes it is best to save money and deal with the issues that come with it. Here we reveal our secret hack for you to fax with magicJack.
Though this seems simple, we found that many people were asking questions on how to login to their magicJack accounts and where certain functions with their magicJack account were. We put together a simple post about how to login, but then we took it a little deeper hitting on other important questions such as “What happens if you forgot your password?”, “How to login if you bought a used device?” and even took some time to touch on registration and activation for first time users. We hope this little guide is helpful for anyone that might have questions.
We get many questions about the wifi device that never was and if the company has a device that works over wifi. The company was suppose to release a wifi device and we had written a post about it, but have since updated it to explain what happened instead. Hop on over to our magicJack wifi post to get the full run down.
There are many questions about the devices that require much briefer answers such as what they are, how much they cost, if you can port your current number, the number of minutes it comes with and what types of calls are include for the yearly price. These are all answered in our full and complete review of the company but we decided it could be much easier to have an FAQ page that included brief answers to these common questions.
Using The Service In Mexico
One question we’ve seen in a handful of times in the past is does the service work well in Mexico. We own the device and so while we were traveling down there we decided to run several tests on it. The results were interesting and we suggest you check them out if you have any relatives in Mexico, are planning to move there or just go on an extended vacation and want to bring your home phone line with you.
There are often a lot of complaints about the companies customer service and we have attempted to explain it and wrote about how it is definitely sufficient but definitely not the best in the industry. It is important to note that they are aware of this and trying hard to improve it, though the recurrent complaints show that it can’t be fixed overnight happen overnight.
Is It A Scam?
We chuckle that we often get asked this question and our answer is simple. Would they really have millions upon millions of loyal users that are happy with the product if it was a scam? We take it a step further in our post where we answer this question in-depth. It is important to note that the company carried out a ‘brand refresh’ a couple years ago to move away from the “As Aeen On TV” persona that had begun to plague their image. The “As Seen On TV” persona was characterized by the infomercials they ran for years.
Customer Service Phone Number
You would think that a phone company would provide phone support but that hasn’t been the case with magicJack in the past and barely is today. The reality is that in order to offer unlimited phone service for $20-$30 per year they simply can’t afford to have a call center. Despite this they have added a few numbers in recent years for order inquires, billing questions, technical support and for phone orders. Technical support is still widely available via chat and we aren’t sure of the results you will get, if any, when calling the number.
magicJack Blackberry App
Using the service via a smartphone is immensely popular so naturally we get asked a lot of questions about it. We get asked repeatedly if magicJack has an app that is compatible with Blackberry smartphones or if there is anyway to use it with a Blackberry phone. Seriously, does anybody even use Blackberries anymore? We suppose this is a legitimate question since it gets asked often so we have addressed it in our magicJack Blackberry article.
We see that many people experience errors with their devices and phone service and we are in the process of working on a post explaining exactly what each error code means.
