How Does FreedomPop Work?

FreedomPop works by giving out 500MB of data free to users in addition to 200 voice minutes. Text messages are unlimited; however they will eat up your data. This may sound like a dream come true, but understanding how FreedomPop works will give you an insight as to whether or not this is a good option for you.

This particular wireless carrier offers three different plans, one of which is 100% free for the first year, and all plans are month-to-month, so there are no contracts, activation fees, cancellation fees or credit checks. One of the primary reasons that so many people have switched to FreedomPop is because they do not charge hidden fees or require contracts of any kind for customers to use their services.

Our review of the website revealed that there are a number of different mobile phones to choose from, though you will have to make sure you select one that is compatible with the plan you are interested in. Some of Freedomp Pop’s phones are Certified Pre-Owned, but they are all in excellent condition. You will be able to browse through all of the different plans and phones on the company’s website before deciding which one is right for you. This carrier offers a variety of the latest and greatest smartphones, so you will have a myriad of options to choose from.

Before signing up for the free 500MB of data and 200 voice minutes, we suggest you learn more about the features and options this service provides. Additionally, you want to weigh the pros and cons to see if a ‘free’ service like FreedomPop is for you, or if a pay as you go plan is going to be better for your situation.

Why Choose FreedomPop?

Certified Pre-Owned Phones – All of the Certified Pre-Owned phones that are sold by FreedomPop go through extensive physical damage and functionality tests as well as data wipes, factory resets, and advanced frequency checks to ensure they are in perfect working condition. There are many inexpensive Certified Pre-Owned phones so they are affordable for most people.

Free High-Speed Data & Minutes – Those who sign up with FreedomPop will automatically get 500MB of lightning fast movie streaming, downloading and data for free each month, which is a feature that you will not find with any other wireless carriers. Even plans with additional data from this carrier only cost a fraction of the price that Verizon and AT&T charge. Also enjoy 200 voice minutes for free each and every month.

No Contracts – Another great thing about Freedom Pop Phone service is the fact that you never have to sign a contract like with so many other mobile carriers, this gives you the option to cancel your service whenever you want without having to worry about commitments or fees of any kind.

Premium Plus Service – Freedom Pop’s Premium Plus service is available for just $5.99/month, providing you with access to Sprint’s voice network through FreedomPop’s premium voice, as well as Wi-Fi tethering, and visual voicemail through the Freedom Pop Voicemail Android app. This voicemail Android app will allow you to receive, manage, and store all of your voicemails efficiently, as well as recorded personalized greetings for anyone who calls you. The Premium Voice feature ensures high-quality voice, even when the network connection is low. Wireless tethering allows you to turn your phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot, enabling you to connect up to 8 different devices wherever you go. Data Rollover (for an additional fee) allows you to roll over all of your unused data and accumulate up to 20GB, which you can use anytime you want.

Universal Use – instead of having one allocated phone, the company allows you to use the same number on any of your phones simply by downloading the FreedomPop application to your mobile device. This application is available in both the Google Play Android store and the Apple iOS store!

Bring Your Own Device – you can set up your existing phone with the FreedomPop service (providing it passes their requirements), or you can purchase a no contract device from their website at a great rate.

Super Cheap Plans For Those That Want More – Great plan options for paid users wanting more for less than the going rate. Plan options ranging from 2GB up to 10GB.

Getting Started With FreedomPop

If you want to get started with FreedomPop you can purchase one of their phones, or see if your phone already meets the eligibility requirements via their website. If you already have a phone, you are charged a fee for the use of FreedomPop; however this is waived if you buy one of FreedomPop’s smartphones via their website.

Once you’ve got your phone sorted out, you’ll have to create an account. The account is created online and will guide you through a step-by-step process of setting up your phone and service. Once the phone is linked to your account, you should be able to use your FreedomPop service almost immediately.

For setup of your USB modem or hub, consult the instructions provided or follow the video tutorials on FreedomPop’s website.

FreedomPop Service Plans

FreedomPop offers a number of different plans that you will want to know about so you can choose the one that will meet all of your specific needs.

Talk, Text & LTE Data for a Year

With this plan you will get a total of 200 talk minutes, unlimited text, and 500 MB of data for FREE for a full year. This is a monthly plan, which means that you can cancel anytime you want. This plan runs through the Sprint network and is typically $10.99 after the first year. This is the world’s only 100% free mobile phone plan (as of January 2016).

Unlimited Talk and Text Monthly with 500 MB of Data

The second plan that you will have to choose from with FreedomPop includes unlimited talk and text and 500 MB of data for just $10.99 per month. You can choose to talk and text over Wi-Fi or using the cellular network. You will get the first month free and there are absolutely no credit checks or cancellation fees.

Unlimited Talk & Text with 1GB of Data

The last plan that FreedomPop offers includes unlimited talk and text with 1GB of data for the low monthly rate of $19.99. With this plan the first month is free and no credit check is required. This plan, like all of FreedomPop’s other plans, is month-to-month, so you can cancel at anytime time without incurring any fees whatsoever. The 1GB of full speed data will allow you to browse the web on your mobile device faster and more cheaply than ever before.

The Good

Fairly cheap even with the extra fees – if you’re looking at a cell phone bill of over $60 from a normal provider, you’re going to be saving a TON of money with FreedomPop even if you add in the extra fees, premium use, and active status charge.

Fair amount of devices to choose from – while it’s said that the devices are refurbished Sprint phones that are offered on contract, you’ll actually find that you have a pretty decent selection of Android and Apple devices to choose from.

Free 500MB – one of the best features is that this is a good option for light phone users. You get 500MB of data for free from FreedomPop before you need to start paying something. For those who don’t watch a myriad of movies or download extensive amounts of games, this is a great option that can save you a fortune because, well, it’s free.

Free International Calling – There is also free international calling, which is a particularly great feature for those who have friends and family overseas.

Free International Texting Over Wi-Fi – You will also never have to pay anything for calls and texts that are sent/received over Wi-Fi to over 50 different countries and there are discounted for rates for country-specific plans.

30-day Money Back Guarantee – If you still don’t feel completely comfortable making the switch to FreedomPop, you will want to keep in mind that there is a 30-day money back guarantee with no questions asked.

The Bad

Though FreedomPop is an incredible cell phone service they aren’t perfect, as is the case with all companies in this world. Here we list some of the negatives as of August 2015. These may not be actual negatives anymore as the company has made HUGE efforts in recent months to meet or exceed customers demands.

Customer support – When we were surfing the FreedomPop website we were unable to find any sort of customer service number or even a chat support. The only thing we found was a contact form and a general FAQ/info page. This is somewhat surprising and reminds us of the complaints regarding magicJack’s lack of phone support. Though we again ask the question, do you really expect to get the same quality of customer service while paying next to nothing. It’s pretty simple if you think about it, the companies that provide super deals cannot possibly keep the same overhead as the more expensive multi-billion dollars companies and stay profitable.

Tricky upsales and charges set in place – When going through the signup process you are offered many upsales and ‘extras’. These aren’t designed to be tricky but they can be if you rush through the process. Just know that all of these beyond the base free plan will cost you something. Though most are $5-$10 and you will still be saving a TON over your previous carrier.

Final Thoughts On FreedomPop

There are many different wireless carriers to choose from, but FreedomPop is definitely one of the more honest, straightforward companies out there. This carrier is the only one to offer a completely free talk, text, and data service with no contract whatsoever, which is fairly impressive on its own. The 4G speeds that FreedomPop subscribers get with these plans rival other carriers around the world, which is something that will definitely appeal to those who spend a lot of time going online with their phones.

The fact is that FreedomPop is what it advertises itself as being, which is a cheap (or even free) wireless carrier for those who are tired of signing one or even two year long contracts. This carrier really does allow its customers to cancel their service anytime they want without fear of any fees. The Premium Plus service from FreedomPop also has a lot of great features to offer, which is why it is worth considering for those who are thinking about switching from their current wireless carrier.

After the first year the price doubled for me. I had to hunt down the 1-800-number. When I called they did refund my money.FreedomPop Customer Service Phone Number: +1 888-743-8107

Not Working

I ordered the MiFi on Groupon for like $50. It was supposed to be 500mb of free data, forever.

It never worked, then they told me they no longer supported it, and I had to pay a $4/month payment to get data, paid in 3 month intervals. So I did. My parents needed it as a hotspot, while they were in a house that had no internet (so they could send emails). It never worked. Got billed again too. Cancelling very soon.

I cant recommend this service.

Bad, Bad, BAD!

I ordered the basic service, and a $200.00 iPhone, its been over a month and I've heard nothing, and can't get a refund. The worst PR I've ever seen.

Horrible Experience

I have been with Freedompop since March, this is my experience.First they sent my phone to the wrong address. When I finally got ahold of a real person, they told me it was too late the package was already gone. That was all the assistance I received.Next my service was cutoff because I changed the credit card on my Paypal account? I paid for 1gb service and was cutoff before that data was used. Last month I was cutoff again and the only way I could get my phone back on was to upgrade my service to 2gb. Guess what? It is time for a new cycle and I am cutoff again. Oh, and it is the weekend, so the only way (again) to get my service back for the weekend is to upgrade again. Oh and all this time automatic top off has been on.Next let's talk about the quality of service. My phone will stop working out of the blue and often in the middle of a conversation. When I called customer support, the only assistance was to do the carrier reset process. Well, I am now doing this process every day. When the phone does work, my calls cut in and out as if I'm on a half duplex line. Really?

Very Unhappy

Freedom pop is the worst cell phone company I have ever dealt with. Do not give them any of your account information. They will take money out of your account without your authorization and then turn your phone off. There billing and customer service department do not know what they are doing, they can not explain stuff that they do. They will take money out of your account and when you call them they say your money will be refunded but you don't ever get the refund. I cancelled there service in March of 2016, and I had gotten there service in just January of 2016. I cancelled them due to taking unauthorized money out of my account... I requested they delete all my account info and service on March 10, 2016 only to find out they took $37.98 out of my account on June 3, 2016 so beware. I paid 70.00 for the phone that am stuck with because all they want is your money Please read this they aren't very good.

Free isn't worth the hassle

I've been a Freedom Pop customer for 6 months. I signed up for the free basic plan, but paid an activation fee and the fee for porting my number. Freedom Pop has automatically charged me, on numerous occasions, for extra features that I did not authorize. I think that is shady business. If we call, they will take off the charges, but I have to catch the charges on my credit card bill. They do not notify you of the charges.

Sucks all around

Freedompop will confuse you, won't give you good customer service & will charge you for unknown and unexpected things, maybe even under false pretenses. I will be switching very shortly.

I've had one FREEDOMPOP free cell phone for over a year as a backup and it has always worked when I've needed it, for some reason after about 8-10 months they started giving me unlimited talk and text and it was still free!!! I got another account the other day but had problems activating it so I went to their 'contact us' section and they got back to me on live chat within an hour. They spent almost an hour helping me and got it working.

Run! Fast! I've had freedom for 3 months and it's been nothing but one problem after another. They have shut my service down, and double charged me, twice, each! When you email customer service it takes them 3 business days to respond. Talking to them on the phone is worse. After explaining I was double charged, they said "I'm sorry you don't understand how we work..." They also refuse to release my phone, and lie saying they'll give me an unlock code within 48 hours, and never get back to me.Save yourself the frustration!

Junk -- Sacramento, CA

You get what you pay for. The service is extremely unreliable, you never know if it is going to work or not, the data/text usage accounting is fake, they can halt your service with 50% of data/text usage. Support is web based and very confusing (on purpose, to get you to waste your time and upgrade to a paid plan).Stay away!!!
