Frequently Asked Questions About MagicJack

What Is magicJack?
It is a revolutionary land line style telephone service, except that it isn’t run through actual telephone lines but rather is processed and sent over the internet via VoIP. The company and service is referred to as ‘magicJack’ with various different devices that actually facilitate the process.

What Is The Original magicJack?

The first generation device is a small USB device that is plugs into your computers USB port on one end and your home phone on the other. The result is a VoIP home phone that to you works no different than your traditional landline phone. The only difference is the price. The original magicJack was the first device released by the company and only works via a computers USB port.

What Is The magicJack Plus?
It is an updated version of the original magicJack device and the 2nd generation device from magicJack. The magic Jack plus is the same except that it doesn’t require a computer and can be hooked straight into your modem. Updates on this device include HD Voice and Echo Control that dramatically increase sound quality along with the ability to bypass a computer and hook the device directly into an RJ-45 Ethernet port.

What Is 2014 magicJack Plus?
It is the third gen device from the company. It is similar to the magicJack plus but comes with a better processor that has elevated call quality to new heights. It also comes with an SDIO slot on the side and the words wifi printed on it. It’s still a mystery as to what this is for, with some saying the company hopes to offer triple play internet and TV services eventually. Others downplay this suggestion and merely state that with a future firmware upgrade it would to allow the device to work via wifi instead of having to plug it into a modem or router.

What is magicJack Wifi?

The magicJack Wifi is a device that the company planned to release before eventually scraping it in favor of the Plus 2014. It was suppose to work 100% wirelessly with no need to be hooked to router or modem. The WiFi, a dream to many, unfortunately was never seen. It was quickly made obsolete when they came out with the magicJack App, though not exactly a home phone to many because you have to answer a smartphone, it made no need for a magicJack device at all anymore, if you so choose!

What Is The magicJack Go?
magicJack Go is the fourth generation device from the MagicJack VocalTec stable of radical VoIP solutions for low cost and is their 4th generation device. With the roaring success of its previous devices – MagicJack (Desktop Only), MagicJack Plus (Direct Connect RJ45 to Router), and MagicJack Plus 2014 (Wi-Fi Connect to Router) – the company has already developed an established fan-base and technical expertise in cloud-based communications. The device got a redesign to a new look which is more sleek, smaller and also brought back the full year of service with the initial device purchase.

What Is The magicJack EXPRESS?

The magicJack EXPRESS, released in 2015, is another device from VocalTec Communcations LTD. It is nearly the same as the previous GO device but comes at a cheaper cost and only 3 months of service. It costs just $39.95 but you will have to RE-UP after just 3 months. It is exactly the same in shape and size to the GO but is white in color. Other than that we have been unable to find any differences and see little reason to upgrade if you already have the MJ GO.

All devices come with a full year of free service except the 2014 magicJack plus, which oddly only comes with 6 months of service. For future service it costs just $5 per month, $20 for a 6 month plan, $35 for a 1 year plan or just $99.75 for a full 5 years of service. International minutes costs extra and can be purchased on a per minute basis. International calling rates vary widely depending on which country you are calling.

If I get the device can I keep my current telephone number?
Yes, for a fee they allow users to port their number. Although not all numbers are available for porting, the majority are so you will have to check with the company about yours specifically. There also may not be some area codes available. Check all of the magicJack area codes to see if they have yours.

What features does it come with?
It comes with all of the standard features you have come to expect on our landline phone plus additional features for free that you typically have to pay for with a traditional phone company. There are far to many features to list here. For a complete list see magicJacks’ FAQ database at for anything you may have questions about.

How do I make calls with the device?
Simply hook your magic Jack device up to your computer and follow the installation process. Once finished you can either hook a regular telephone up to the other end of your magicjack or you can begin making calls straight from your computer via their PC softphone. With the plus you bypass the need for a computer and can simply hook it directly into your router or modem, no installation required. Or you can quickly and easily download the magicApp on to your smartphone (all iOS devices, android, blackberry, and windows phones included) and begin making calls for free immediately.

How many minutes does the it come with?
It comes with unlimited minutes to the United States and Canada.

Does it include long distance calls for free?

Although I have tried to cover all questions if yours is not covered here you will need to visit the official site and follow the onsite instructions to use their customer service chat feature. Or you can try one of their secret customer service phone numbers.

How Can This Phone Service Be So Cheap?
The reason it is so cheap is because the phone service runs as a VoIP network just like Vonage rather than through traditional telephone lines. This means that all calls around routed through the internet. The overhead costs of VoIP service is significantly cheaper than that of traditional service and in this case magic Jack is passing that savings on to its customers.

Is The magic Jack A Scam?
Absolutely not, there is NO magicJack Scam! The company is owed by a operated by VocalTec LTD., a large multi-million dollar company that is traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange. They have a very large customer base and has been around for quite a while now without any intention of going anywhere.

Are There Any Hidden Fees?
Nope! The only thing not included in the subscription fee is international calling. The monthly, yearly or 5 year plans include all local and long distance calling. If you want to make international calls you have to prepay for them.

Does The magic Jack Really Come With Unlimited Minutes?
Not exactly… We have never had an issues with using too many minutes but we have heard and a review of their terms of service state that they reserve the right to cut users off if they are using an obscene number of minutes. This is normal with all VoIP providers and is simply a way to make sure that their service isn’t exploited for commercial uses.

What If I Can’t Get My magic Jack to Work?
If your magic Jack isn’t working we recommend you contact magic Jack customer service chat.

Does magic Jack Have Good Customer Service?
magic Jack does not have phone support. They only provide chat support. This is for two reasons. The first being that there is no way for them to have full phone customer service center and still be able to offer service at only $5 per month/$35 per year/$99.75 per 5 years. The other reason is because users who need help most likely don’t have a working phone. If they did they wouldn’t need to call magic Jack for help.

I now have an older magic jack with 15 months of service left. If I get a new magicjack plus 2014, can I connect to my router and start using it immediately? Will it know my current number automatically? Can I split the output and have one to my phone and one to my fax?

I just bought a MagicJack Plus and I'm having problems my phone line coming in to my computer is a dedicated circuit and has a dsl filter outside in phone box and one dsl filter where it plugs into the modem. If I unplug the filter at the modem the phone picks up a sound like 60 cycle hum. I requested the same number that I have been using and they tell me it takes ten days before we can receive any incoming calls. How do we know if the magic jack plus is working? Any help will be appreciated?

    • Jesse December 19, at 15:03

Unfortunately magicJack doesn't yet work with a wireless router but rather needs to be directly connected to the router via one of the ports on the back of it.
